Meadowfoam Seed Oil – Why It's Called the “Gold of Oils”

Today we're exploring one of skincare's best-kept secrets: a plant oil prized for its exceptional stability, luxurious feel, and impressive skin benefits.

Overview of Meadowfoam Seed Oil

Meadowfoam gets its name from its delicate white flowers. When the fields bloom, they resemble waves of white foam moving in the wind.

Researchers began studying meadowfoam seed oil in the 1960s, when its fatty acid profile was first characterized.

The United States was the first to commercialize meadowfoam seed oil, but Japan was quick to recognize its value and bring it to premium skincare markets. However, it has always been expensive. There are two main reasons for this. First, the flowering period is short (only 3–5 days a year), and yields are low. More importantly, its unique fatty acid profile gives it properties rarely found in other plant oils, which is why it's often called the "gold of oils."

Characteristics of Meadowfoam Seed Oil

Despite its short flowering period, meadowfoam seed oil has the longest shelf life of any plant oil — thanks to its unique fatty acid composition.

First, meadowfoam seed oil contains more long-chain fatty acids (C20 and C22) than olive oil, which is dominated by C18 oleic acid.

In general, the longer the carbon chain, the higher the stability. Jojoba seed oil is a classic example — highly stable due to its C18-22 straight-chain unsaturated fatty acids and wax esters. Meadowfoam seed oil contains an even greater proportion of these long-chain fatty acids, contributing to its exceptional oxidative stability.

Second, the number and position of a fatty acid's double bonds also play an important role. The antioxidant activity and stability of unsaturated fatty acids are influenced by both the number and position of their carbon-carbon double bonds. DHA, for example, owes its strong antioxidant activity to its multiple double bonds, particularly those at the Δ3 and Δ6 positions.

The Δ3 and Δ6 positions are prone to forming conjugated double bonds and are therefore highly reactive but less stable.

Sweet almond oil is another excellent skincare oil that contains more than 90% unsaturated fatty acids, but more than 20% of these are linoleic acid.

Linoleic acid oxidizes easily because it has double bonds at the Δ9 and Δ12 positions — both prone to forming conjugated double bonds under environmental changes.

Although meadowfoam seed oil is composed of more than 98% unsaturated fatty acids, its double bonds are located at the Δ5 and Δ13 positions—not at Δ3, Δ6, Δ9, or Δ12. These positions are less likely to form conjugated double bonds, making the oil highly stable and resistant to external factors.

Antioxidant Properties and Stability

With such a unique fatty acid profile, it's no surprise that meadowfoam seed oil has one of the highest average Oxidative Stability Index (OSI) values among all vegetable oils.

At 110°C, meadowfoam seed oil has an OSI of 80 hours, while jojoba oil (in second place) has an OSI of 40 hours. Even at 130°C, meadowfoam still maintains an OSI of 14-15 hours, whereas jojoba oil drops to just 1-1.5 hours — making meadowfoam about 10 times more stable.

Summary

Meadowfoam seed oil stands out for three reasons:

1. Its long-chain unsaturated fatty acids lock in moisture effectively while staying liquid at room temperature—ideal for creams and lotions.

2. It offers strong antioxidant activity yet remains highly stable, thanks to its unique Δ5 and Δ13 double bonds.

3. Its unique lubricating properties create a smooth, elegant skin feel, making it ideal for premium skincare.

Together, these properties deliver potent antioxidant protection, superior hydration, and stability unmatched by other plant oils.

For those with sensitive, oily, or inflammation-prone skin, meadowfoam seed oil is an ingredient worth considering.
